I'd like to share my experiences and frustration.įrom underneath, although you can clearly see the sensor, you CANNOT see the one 10mm bolt securing it. If the sensor is where it's shown in the attached image someone shared, number 2 in the picture, with a silver-wrapped wire attached to it, it's quite easy to see, from beneath the car, behind the front driver's wheel, and also from above, looking down between the firewall and back of the engine. It has been quite the challenge finding detailed info on anything with my car because the 3.6L high performance flavors of the Equinox/Torrent/Vue are very rare cars the 3.4L motor being far more prevalent.Īnyway, I tried getting at the crank position sensor over the weekend and after hours of swearing, I had to give up.the car won.

I have a 2008 Pontiac Torrent GXP that I believe has the exact same 3.6L motor. Hi Everyone, I just joined over the weekend so I could see the pictures attached.

as far as trouble codes, i have an OBD bluetooth scanner, it does not pick up any codes, but i have not taken it in to a dealer/mechanic yet as i was hoping to avoid that If we dont prime it, it definitely will not start on the first try (unless we just barely had it running). We have tried "priming" it by turning the key to run and leaving it while the fuel pump does its thing, and then start it, but this really doesnt help much, maybe a little. We dont turn the key all the way off after the first attempt, just turn to the one click left, then crank it again and it starts immediately. The problem happens almost everytime we try to start the car, id say around 90% of the time where it will not start on the first time, but ALWAYS starts on the second time. So, this first actually started happening 2 years ago when we first moved to arizona, we thought it was due to the heat because it was 110+ when we moved here, but it never went away. It has a standard key cylinder, not a push button start. never really had any work done on it before. I should have came here before i ordered anything. also if your vue is awd you will not have a happy time it is in the firewall side of the moter near the trans bell houseing down low behind the pto/tcase.a fwd will be easy.hth also since the 3.6L came out in 04 in the cts i have never seen a ckp/crank sensor failure caused other than rodent damage.

have you had it scaned for code's.?be advised that sine 05-07 across all gm lines there are 3 types of dtc's type A that set a light right away.type B that depending on the subsystem may or may not ever set a ses lamp on (a vtd/security signal performance code comes to mind) and a type C that will never set off a light but will play havoc with subsystems.querry when you start it the 2nd time are you shutting the key off and turning it back on&cranking or do you leave it in run and crank again.?. sounds more like a bad purge solinoid allowing engine vacum to pull gas vapors from the charcoal cannister. also is this every time or only intermitantly?.and to be clear it does crank but doesn't fire up,but does fire up on the 2nd attempt. also if it won't crank but you have dash lights ,but on the 2nd attempt it does cranks and start(this is where it makes a difference as to push button or key as the comunication protocals are different between the 2). do you have a push button start or a standard key cyclinder?.

Not knowing for sure as i haven't seen one doesn't mean in gm's world it does not exist. It may help to provide more info car mileage, maintenance done, parts replaced. Whether your replacement works without needing a relearn procedure is up to you and what occurs after replacing it.

Be forewarned, the service manual states a scantool (GM's Tech II, not yours, mine or anyone's scantool) is needed to perform a crank relearn procedure. The drawings below should help if you decide to try replacing it. You haven't described one of these symptoms.

Starting up won't be possible until the engine cools off and the cycle begins again with engine heat killing the faulty crank sensor. Intermittent crank sensor failure occur with engine heat as engine heating occurs a faulty crank sensor will fail with the engine dying, requiring rolling the car off to the side of the road. The starter can crank the engine over until the battery dies but the engine will never fire up. Outright failure results in the engine never firing up. In other forums here, there are only two symptoms of crank sensor failure, outright and intermittent. In general, if the engine starts and runs, the crank sensor is working.
